Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the task by exploring reasons why people spend money on vitamin pills and suggesting methods to encourage a healthy diet instead. The student presents a clear position and supports ideas with explanations and examples, such as mentioning convenience, lack of time, and referencing a UK health department survey. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and lack depth. For instance, the discussion on why people purchase pills could be more thoroughly explored beyond basic convenience. Furthermore, minor over-generalizations occur in the supporting details. Nonetheless, all prompt requirements are covered, which aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged into four paragraphs representing a clear overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt part, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'To begin with', 'At the same time', and 'To conclude', although some are applied somewhat mechanically. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, separating the main ideas logically. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward transitions and dense phrasing. The progression of ideas is discernible, fitting the Band 6 descriptor where the arrangement is coherent overall despite some faulty or mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, including terms like 'discourse', 'explicate', 'dietician', and 'individuals'. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'incontovertable' instead of 'incontrovertible', 'tiffen' instead of 'tiffin', 'chors' instead of 'chores', and 'hebit' instead of 'habit'. Word choice and collocations are occasionally unnatural, for example 'instant take energy' and 'gain fruits and vegetable'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0, as the noticeable spelling and word choice errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and word forms. Examples include 'spend large amount of money' instead of 'spending a large amount', 'how people could be ifluenced for taking' instead of 'influenced to take', and 'people should to avoid' instead of 'people should avoid'. Punctuation errors, such as unnecessary spaces before commas, are also persistent. While the meaning remains mostly clear despite the errors, the high frequency of inaccurate complex structures places this performance firmly at Band 5.0.
