IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Doctors advice that a healthy diet includes all the essential vitamins that a person requires. On the other hand some people still prefer spending money on vitamin pills. I believe having a healthy diet is much more beneficial for the body rather than having vitamin pills. People who buy these pills do not have the enough time to cook a complete meal for themselves.

I believe that when people do not eat all the three meals of the day, they feel exhausted and tired. To compensate the vitamins that their body did not recieve, they buy these vitamin pills. Especially people who have long working hours skip atleast one meal a day which can harm their health in the long term. So working professionals maintain their physcial health by take medicines like vitamin B12, vitamin E etc. For example, nurses in the hosptials know the importance for healthy food. But due to long shifts some nurses prefer taking vitamin pills as it saves them time.

I believe keeping ready-to-eat healthy food in the departmental stores can be one way to persuade people to eat healthy. As cooking healthy food takes time, if people are provided with healthy food at low cost and in less time then people can easily be persuaded. For example, instant noddles are available in all departmental stores. If these noddles are made healthy then it can solve the problem. Also, prescriptions from the doctors should be required if people want to buy vitamin pills. Otherwise people might misuse these pills.

If healthier food can be made quickly and vitamin pills are not readily available for everyone, then I think people can be more inclined towards eating healthy food rather than relying on vitamin pills.
