How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, taking supplements instead of a proper diet has become a trend. Professionals advise that, a healthy diet provides all the significant vitamins. Unfortunately, people still depend more on vitamin pills than healthy meals.

On the one hand, individuals always prefer to opt for the simple and effective methods. According to them, preparing a healthy meal is time-consuming. For example, people are always on a busy schedule; in such situations, if they feel tired, they prefer to take supplements rather than spend time and energy cooking. Therefore, the demand for supplements is increasing day by day. Moreover, these days everyone is using social media, and through that, pharmaceutical companies are promoting their products in such a way that people become convinced that these supplements are essential for our energy.

To solve this issue, authorities should take necessary actions like promoting healthy eating habits through public awareness campaigns. Secondly, the availability of organic and fresh vegetables and fruits at reasonable prices also attracts customers and thereby increases the usage of these products in their diet. For instance, new supermarkets are providing easy meal preparation packages with recipes, attracting more customers as well as motivating them to prepare healthy meals at home. Additionally, try to include preparing meals at home as part of our culture. As a result, people are trying healthier meals instead of depending on vitamin pills.

In conclusion, although vitamin pills are easy to consume and more convenient to use, having a healthy meal is more beneficial and advisable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both questions and maintain a clear overall view that convenience and advertising encourage supplement use, while healthier eating should be promoted. The explanation that cooking is time-consuming is relevant, and the example of social-media promotion adds support. Your proposed campaigns, affordable produce and meal-preparation packages also respond to the second question. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the link between tiredness and choosing pills could be developed, and the suggestion to make home cooking part of “our culture” needs a clearer explanation of how this would persuade people. More specific examples or detail about why people trust supplements would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph proposing solutions, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “To solve this issue,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. Within the body paragraphs, examples are placed near the points they support. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from public campaigns to affordable produce, supermarket packages and cultural habits. Use clearer transitions to show how these solutions relate, and make references such as “these products” more precise so the reader can immediately identify what is meant.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “supplements,” “public awareness campaigns,” “availability,” and “reasonable prices,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “necessary actions” and “motivating them.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “significant vitamins” would be better expressed as “essential vitamins,” while “simple and effective methods” is vague in this context. “Everyone is using social media” is also an over-generalisation, and “usage of these products in their diet” is awkward. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “healthy meals” when a more specific phrase would clarify your point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if they feel tired”) and a relative clause (“packages with recipes, attracting more customers”). Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, though they rarely obstruct understanding. For example, the comma after “advise that” is unnecessary, and “try to include preparing meals at home” shifts into an unclear imperative within an otherwise formal argument. The sentence beginning “For example, people are always on a busy schedule” would be more controlled as “Because people often have busy schedules, they may choose supplements when tired.” Check article use, sentence boundaries and consistency of subject and point of view when revising.
