Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people buy vitamins even though doctors say that all the necessary vitamins can be obtained from a healthy diet, but they spend money on supplements. This is mainly because vitamins are an easy way to correct vitamin deficiencies in their bodies, while education and better advice can help them to improve their health through a healthy diet without spending a lot of money on costly supplements.

To commence with a former view, people spend lots of money on vitamin pills because they are a convenient and available option to complete the nutritional deficiency in their bodies. Moreover, they can carry medicines everywhere. For example, if an individual is very busy with their work and has no time for a proper meal, then these pills can provide complete nutrition. As a result, a lot of money is spent by people on vitamin pills.

There are several ways that can encourage people to improve their health instead of relying on medicines. First, doctors and health organisations educate individuals about the health benefits of a healthy diet. Additionally, they plan easy meals that they can have while working. For instance, a variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and whole grains that they can eat anytime during their work. Therefore, taking advice from health consultants prevents them from relying on pills.

In conclusion, people spend money on supplements because of the easy availability of the vitamins and due to a hectic schedule. Taking doctors' advice and planning their day with easy and short meals that they can have anytime prevents them from spending and relyin on medicines

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a relevant focus. The explanation that pills are convenient for busy people is supported with an example about someone who has no time for a proper meal, and you suggest education and easy-to-prepare foods as ways to encourage healthier eating. However, some ideas are more fully addressed than others: the reasons for spending money are mainly reduced to convenience and a hectic schedule, while the claim that pills provide “complete nutrition” is not explained or qualified. The persuasion strategies also need more detail about how doctors or organisations could make dietary changes appealing and practical. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a specific, realistic example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two questions, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and a logical progression. However, some linking feels mechanical, particularly the repeated cause-and-result pattern and “Therefore” before the final point in the second body paragraph. “To commence with a former view” is also an unclear transition, and references such as “they” in the meal-planning sentence could be more precise. Use simpler, more natural transitions and make links between examples and claims explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “vitamin deficiencies,” “nutritional deficiency,” “health organisations,” and “whole grains.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several collocations or word choices are imprecise: “complete the nutritional deficiency” does not naturally express correcting a deficiency, and “complete nutrition” overstates what vitamin pills provide. “Easy and available option” and repeated references to “spending money” also limit precision and variety. The spelling slip “relyin” appears in the conclusion. Aim for more natural combinations and distinguish clearly between supplements and a balanced diet; this would make your vocabulary more accurate and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional example beginning “if an individual is very busy” and a relative clause in “fruits, nuts, vegetables, and whole grains that they can eat.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “Taking doctors’ advice … prevents them from spending and relyin on medicines,” the coordinated verbs do not match in form; use “spending money and relying on medicines.” The phrase “a variety … that they can eat” also has an unclear reference, and the final sentence would benefit from clearer clause structure and punctuation. Continue using complex sentences, but check parallel verb forms, pronoun references, and sentence boundaries during revision.
