Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people spend a lot of money on multivitamins tablets even though they are advised by doctors to have a healthy diet as it fulfills the need of required nutrients. I believe people buy multivitamins pills mainly because of the lack of awareness regarding sufficient amount of nutrient rich food and due to hectic schedule. To overcome this, they can be encouraged to follow a healthy diet through some campaigns and events conducted by food departments.

One of the significant reasons of buying vitamin pills is that people do not have enough knowledge about the required amount of nutrient rich food to be added in their daily diet. There are many people who follow the same diet daily and do not bring variety in their food choices. For instance, several individuals in India eat carbs rich food only such as wheat tortilla and potatoes which leads to protein or other necessary nutrients deficiency as they are not aware about adding protein in their daily meals. Moreover, most working professionals prefer taking vitamin pills due to their busy life. They may not have enough time to cook a variety of food so they tend to buy multivitamins to stay healthy. For example, several people who work in metropolitan cities usually work in flexible shifts and work in odd hours, consequently, they are left with no or very less time and energy to be spent on other activities. Therefore, they prefer buying vitamin pills.

To overcome this problem, governments and food departments should take some initiatives. They can organise some campaigns, events or workshops to persuade and encourage people to eat healthy food. They should make them aware about easily cooked healthy food which can be prepared with basic food materials. Additionally, doctors can also be encouraged to motivate patients to follow a healthy diet instead of recommending vitamin pills to them. Since people visit doctors first when get sick.

In conclusion, due to the lack of knowledge about healthy food and because of hectic schedule people tend to bu multivitamins instead of following a healthy diet. I believe, governments, food departments and doctors can play major role in encouraging them to take healthy food through some events and workshops.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question and maintain a clear position: limited knowledge of nutritious foods and busy schedules explain pill use, while public campaigns and doctors’ advice could encourage dietary change. The examples about a repetitive diet in India and time-poor professionals make the reasons relevant. This meets the core requirements well, and the proposed workshops and simple recipes give the solution some practical detail. However, the explanation of why people spend large sums is not fully developed: you could clarify why pills seem more convenient or reassuring, and why people choose expensive products despite medical advice. The solutions are also less specific than the reasons, so explaining how campaigns would reach people or change habits would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining two causes, a paragraph proposing solutions, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “To overcome this problem” help readers follow the argument. The cause-and-solution organisation is appropriate and easy to understand. At times, however, connections are mechanical or the reference is unclear. “To overcome this” in the introduction refers broadly to the problem, while the later paragraph could signal more explicitly which solution addresses which cause. The final sentence, “Since people visit doctors first when get sick,” is an incomplete supporting thought. Integrating it into the preceding sentence and varying transitions would make cohesion smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “nutrient-rich food,” “deficiency,” “metropolitan cities,” “initiatives,” and “workshops.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more specific language are evident. However, some word combinations and forms are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “multivitamins tablets/pills” is not natural, “carbs rich food” needs a more standard form, and “bu multivitamins” contains a spelling error. “Healthy food” and “people” recur often, so more varied phrasing would improve flexibility. Aim to learn vocabulary in natural combinations—for example, “a balanced diet” and “nutrient deficiencies”—and check spelling and word forms during revision. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they make expression less natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “even though,” “because,” and “so,” and most of the argument remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as “They may not have enough time to cook a variety of food so they tend to buy multivitamins to stay healthy.” There are also some grammatical errors. In “Since people visit doctors first when get sick,” the subject is missing after “when,” and the clause is left as a fragment. “I believe, governments…” has unnecessary punctuation, while “doctors can also be encouraged to motivate patients” is grammatically possible but awkwardly constructed. Review articles, sentence boundaries, and clause completeness, and try to maintain accuracy when combining several ideas in one sentence.
