IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, many people are spending a lot of money on vitamin pills, even though doctors recommended healthy food to get natural vitamins, health organisation and govt should aware public about healthy food, in my opinion healthy foods are vegetables, fruits and eggs, we should also have to take natural food rather then spending a lot of money on vitamin pill or protein intakes.

schools have also aware children in a growing stage that natural healthy foods are very necessary for body, and in this way children are getting knowledge about natural healthy foods and when they grow up they will already know and aware from getting vitamin pills after that there are large amount of people know about this fact and this will be great in future.

in conclusion, people spend alot of money on getting pills because of their routine lifestyle, everyone is busy in their schedule that's why they are not cooking meal at home or take healthy food, they see advertisements which show ads about vitamin pills and they found easy way to get vitamins rather then natural healthy food.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address both questions, but only briefly. You suggest that busy routines and advertisements lead people to choose pills, and you propose public awareness and school education as ways to encourage healthier eating. These are relevant ideas, but the explanation is limited: for example, you do not show how advertising influences decisions or how schools and health organisations could persuade adults to change their habits. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so there is little space to develop reasons, examples, and practical solutions. To strengthen the answer, explain each main point and add a specific example, while making your position and response to both questions more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening, a paragraph about education, and a concluding paragraph. The ideas are generally related to the topic, and phrases such as “in this way” and “in conclusion” signal connections. However, the overall progression is difficult to follow because the opening combines several points in one long sentence, and the second paragraph repeats the idea of children learning about healthy food without clearly linking it to the reasons people buy pills. The conclusion introduces reasons rather than simply drawing together the discussion. Use separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and connect each point clearly to the question it answers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main subject, including “vitamin pills,” “healthy food,” “advertisements,” and “routine lifestyle.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “natural healthy foods” and “a lot of money.” Some word choices and collocations are unclear or unnatural, such as “health organisation and govt should aware public” and “they found easy way.” More precise vocabulary would help explain the causes and solutions, for example, terms for convenience, marketing, balanced diets, and public-health campaigns. Aim to vary repeated phrases and check that words combine naturally, while keeping your meaning direct and easy to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to express connected ideas using longer sentences and clauses, but the range of structures is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “doctors recommended healthy food” does not use the appropriate verb form, while “schools have also aware children” is missing a verb structure. There are also problems with agreement and sentence construction in “they found easy way to get vitamins.” Several ideas are joined with commas, creating run-on sentences, especially in the opening. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses using clear punctuation. Check verb forms, articles, and subject–verb agreement when editing.
