IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Healthy diet uncontestedly is a better was to source vitamins than relying on chemically designed pills. Not just doctors but from indigenious people to researchers to nutritionists many suggest the above, however, many end up spending alot of money on pills nonetheless.

In my opinion, convinience is the single most dominant reason behind people not paying heed to the advice. The modern life is fast, and demanding and to navigate through that, we have access to abundance of tools and services - thanks to capitalism!

We have frozen food to canned food to ready to eat food. Varied sorts of packaged products that offer convinience but no real nutrition. Cooking with fresh produce is tedious so we rely on the pre-made alternatives, which mostly contains high sugar, salt or carbohydrates. Because of this people have to rely on artifical sources like pills for nutrients.

Well, focusing on having a healthy diet is not a choice in my case, it was a was of living. My mother is a food and nutritionist. She inculcated the habit of having a balance meal since I was a kid. Through my community work I realised offering people some DIY i.e. do it yourself tips really facilitates the cause. Share easy and tasty recipes of smoothies or overnight oats or just simple fruit salads. Therefore, I feel all that is needed is one tangible activity, once that a part of your routine you start making more and more healthier choices, hence focus on having a healthy diet instead of taking pills and burning a whole in one's pocket.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question and give a clear explanation: convenience and reliance on ready-made food help explain why people turn to pills, while practical recipe ideas are offered as a way to encourage healthier eating. Your personal example about your mother and community work also makes the response relevant. The explanation of why people buy pills is less fully developed, however: the link between processed food and buying supplements is asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example or further reasoning. The proposed solution is more concrete, but could explain how these tips might reach people or become a lasting habit. This gives the response a solid, relevant answer, with some ideas developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression from the general issue, to reasons for buying pills, and then to ways of changing behaviour. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Because of this,” “Therefore,” and “hence” show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth or precise: the opening moves quickly from doctors’ advice to several groups of supporters, and the final paragraph combines personal background, community work, suggestions, and a conclusion in one long sequence. The repeated use of “convenience” and “healthy diet” also makes cohesion somewhat mechanical. Clearer topic sentences and a more deliberate separation of the personal example from the proposed solution would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “ready to eat,” “fresh produce,” “pre-made alternatives,” “nutrients,” and “tangible activity.” These choices help communicate the topic and show attempts to use more specific language. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “indigenious,” “convinience,” “artifical,” and “alot.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise: “chemically designed pills” and “burning a whole in one’s pocket” do not sound natural in this context. The meaning remains generally clear, but more accurate spelling and conventional collocations would make the vocabulary more controlled and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the causal construction “Because of this people have to rely…” and the conditional idea that once a habit is established, healthier choices follow. Most of the message is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “The modern life is fast, and demanding” has an unnecessary article and awkward punctuation, while “which mostly contains” does not agree with the plural “alternatives.” The opening fragment, “Not just doctors but from…,” also lacks a clear grammatical structure, and “once that a part of your routine” is incomplete. Check agreement, articles, and sentence completeness, especially in longer sentences.
