IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.

Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?

How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

We have been told by doctors that all the necessary vitamins can be gotten from consuming healthy meals, but some people still purchase pills containing these vitamins.

People would rather spend huge sums of money to purchase supplements because reaching the daily required amount for this nutrient requires eating so many vegetables when on the other hand one pill could give you the same goal. In one of my biology classes in the university, there was a topic about the micronutrients needed by the body and how many grams of food we would consume before we achieve what the body needs on a daily basis. To be honest must people can not adhere to eating that much in a day. In addition, there have been news about how the chemicals used in growing crops and and preserving them can be detrimental to the body, hence individuals would rather opt for peels as they perceive it as a safer option. For example in my house, we enjoy taking oranges and my mum buys them a lot, but she has refuse to purchase any in the past month due to fear of consuming chemicals that are damaging to the health.

To help persuade people to improve their diet, the government could organise programs to teach people about basic farming so that they can grow their own crops and control

For example, there was a time when my local goverment council was trying to reduce how much plastics we use, so they organised an outreach to educate people on the importance of not using plastic and used video recordings to decribe it can be harmful to us and the environment. People showed up and it made a lot of impact as improvements have been noticed and I believe this stategy would work for this a well. also, food reach in this class of food should be made cheaper in the market.

In conclusion, people prefer to buy vitamin pills because they feel it is safer than buying food containing these nutrients and that it is easier to consume. To make them eat their vitamins instead, people should be taught to grow their own crops and to reduce the cost of certain food.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and give relevant reasons for buying supplements, including convenience and concerns about chemicals in crops. The biology-class reference and your mother’s reluctance to buy oranges help illustrate these points. You also suggest education and lower food prices as ways to encourage healthier eating. However, the proposed farming programmes are not fully explained: clarify how growing crops would change people’s reliance on pills, and develop the affordability suggestion with a practical example. The comparison between the amount of vegetables needed and one pill is also presented broadly, without explaining that a balanced diet includes varied foods. Overall, the response covers the task, but some ideas are more fully supported than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on solutions, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “In addition,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help show the relationship between ideas. However, progression is less controlled in the solutions paragraph. The sentence about teaching farming is left unfinished at “control,” and the example about reducing plastic use is only indirectly connected to improving diet. Some references are also unclear, such as “this class of food” and “this strategy.” To strengthen cohesion, complete each point, make the example directly support the proposed solution, and use clearer references to the foods or actions discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “supplements,” “micronutrients,” “detrimental,” and “persuade,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “daily required amount.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “peels” appears where you mean pills, “reach the same goal” is not a natural way to describe a supplement’s effect, and “food reach in this class of food” is difficult to understand. Spelling errors such as “goverment,” “decribe,” and “stategy” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations such as “meet daily vitamin requirements” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “so that.” Most of the main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors make parts of the response difficult to follow. For example, “my mum buys them a lot, but she has refuse” needs a correctly formed verb (“has refused”), while “must people can not adhere” has an incorrect determiner and awkward negative construction. The sentence ending “so that they can grow their own crops and control” is incomplete, and the long sentence beginning “In addition” would benefit from clearer punctuation and structure. Check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence completion, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
