IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Doctors tell us that we can get all the vitamins we need from having a healthy diet. Despite this advice, some people continue to spend large sums of money on vitamin pills.
Why do you think some people spend a lot of money on vitamin pills?
How could people be persuaded to improve their diet instead of buying vitamin pills?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that physicians recommend us to follow the traditional diet, which have been using from many years whereas there are some who prefer to spend money on supplements. Although there is an increase in number of vitamin deficiency, homemade meals would be the best alternative of tablets.
The reason why individuals are visiting pharmacy stores to fulfill their vitamins deficiency is to get fast results. Due to a lack of knoweldge about fitness, many people become the victim of healt promblems, and they keep stick on an unhealthy diet. When they try to know about their health through blood test, people often feel bad because of their unusual results. Instead of getting the right advice, they would get an online recommendation for their fast recovery which most likely to be a purchase of market supplements. Therefore, if people add tablets in their routine diet, they may create more problems and increase their budget.
The solution to this problem is to always stick on their homemade meals. It is true that it is a longer process to meet an individual's requirement but it may prevent many health issues to keep a person fit and healthy. People have been consuming the same ingredients for many years, which allows them to stick longer and a easier pathway to follow. A professional advice given by a diet planner may become the adequate option to stay healthy instead of spending hundreds on pills. For example, people usually get the trainer advice after the age of 30, which may keep themselves stay healthy and fit.
To conclude, despite of haviing many benefits of using medicines to recover their vitamins defieciencies, a mix of right advice and doctors's prescription would be beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both questions: you suggest that people buy supplements for quick results after worrying about blood-test results, and recommend homemade meals and professional dietary advice as alternatives. These are relevant points, but the explanation of why people spend large sums is only partly developed; the response focuses more on online recommendations and fast recovery than on the motivations behind spending heavily. The proposed ways to persuade people are also not fully explained: “stick on their homemade meals” is advice, but you do not show how people could be encouraged to follow it. The conclusion introduces doctors’ prescriptions, which does not clearly reinforce the diet-focused solution. Develop each answer with a clearer explanation and a specific, relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the reasons and solution, and a conclusion. This makes the main direction easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “The reason why,” “Therefore,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, the move from blood-test results to online recommendations needs a more explicit explanation, and “Although there is an increase in number of vitamin deficiency” does not clearly connect to the main position. References such as “they” in the final body paragraph can also be ambiguous. Use clearer topic sentences and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “supplements,” “vitamin deficiency,” “blood test,” “homemade meals,” and “professional advice.” There is also an attempt to use more formal expressions such as “adequate option” and “individual’s requirement.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the intended meaning less clear: “fulfill their vitamins deficiency,” “keep stick on,” and “trainer advice” are examples. Spelling errors such as “knoweldge,” “healt,” and “defieciencies” also reduce accuracy. Build a more reliable set of natural health-related phrases, and check spelling and word forms carefully. Prefer precise, familiar collocations over formal-sounding phrases that do not fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although,” “When,” and “which.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “the traditional diet, which have been using from many years” has problems with agreement, verb form, and tense; “it may prevent many health issues to keep a person fit” does not express the intended relationship clearly; and “a easier pathway” has an article error. There are also problems with sentence construction in “which may keep themselves stay healthy and fit.” Practise accurate relative clauses, subject–verb agreement, and infinitive or gerund patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete, clear structure.
