IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps below illustrate the accessibility of roads which are reaching to a hospital in 2007 and 2010
Overall, as we saw significant developments in the city hospital area in 2007 and 2010.
Two roundabout roads ,bus station and two car parks have been constructed.
Looking at the whole renovation, two circular roads constructed at both sides of hospital road to control traffic. Two roads arose from the hospital road lead to a bus station on the west side.
City hospital had only one parking area for both staff and public. Now two distinct parking areas have been added. One staff parking area is close to hospital road between south and east and second parking area is at the gateaway of the City hospital between the north and the east .Therefore, bus stops demolished from hospital road due to the replocation of the public parking area. The whole structure of the city hospital is changed in just 3 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main changes: the addition of two roundabouts and a bus station, the separation of staff and public parking, and the removal of the individual bus stops. These are relevant features, and the comparison between the two years is clear in places. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The roundabouts are at the intersections of Hospital Road with Ring Road and City Road, not simply “at both sides” of Hospital Road. The bus station is west of the road and connects to it; the maps do not show two roads arising from Hospital Road. The public car park is east of Ring Road, rather than at the hospital’s “gateway.” A more precise overview and clearer descriptions of locations would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and further details comparing the two maps. This helps the reader identify the broad changes. However, the progression between points is not always clear, and several ideas are compressed into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “One staff parking area…” combines the locations of both car parks and then moves directly to the bus stops, making the relationships difficult to follow. Linking words such as “Therefore” do not clearly express the relationship between the removal of the bus stops and the new public car park. Organise the description by area or feature, and use clearer references to distinguish the two car parks and the road connections.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “bus station,” “parking area,” and “west side,” so the reader can understand the general subject. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “distinct parking areas.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “roads which are reaching to a hospital,” “two circular roads,” and “the gateaway of the City hospital.” “Demolished” is also not the most suitable way to describe bus stops being removed. These choices sometimes make the locations or changes less precise. Aim for standard map-description phrases such as “road access to,” “roundabouts were added,” and “the bus stops were removed,” and check spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “Therefore” and one using “between.” However, errors in sentence construction, articles, agreement, and punctuation are frequent enough to make some details harder to follow. For example, “Two roundabout roads … have been constructed” has an incorrect plural form, while “two circular roads constructed” is missing a finite verb. The sentence “One staff parking area is close … and second parking area is…” also needs parallel structure and an article before “second.” Tense use is not consistently controlled when describing changes between the maps. Use past forms for changes made by 2010, and check each sentence for a complete verb and clear punctuation.
