IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Given are the maps illustrating the road access to a hospital in a city in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the access to the city hospital was increased and more new features can be seen in 2010 than in 2007.
The ring road located in the north of the city hospital remains the same in the both years. In 2007, there was only one entrance to the hospital from south faced to the staff and public car park. But in 2010, there were two entrances from south and east. The car park for the staff and public located in the south has changed only for the staff in 2010.There was another car park for the public located east of the ring rode.
There were six bus stops in either sides of the hospital road in 2007, but it replaced with a large bus station located west of the hospital road in 2010. Furthermore, there were newly added two roundabouts in sarting and ending points of the hospital road in 2010. The city road remains the same in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main changes and provide a clear overview: access was reorganised, the bus stops were replaced by a station, and new roundabouts appeared. Most details match the maps, including the staff-only car park and the new public car park east of Ring Road. The description also compares features across both years. However, some location details are inaccurate or imprecise: the original shared car park is east of Hospital Road, not south of it, and the maps show Hospital Road connecting Ring Road to City Road rather than two new entrances from the south and east. The statement that Ring Road is only to the north also overlooks its position around the hospital’s north, west and east sides. More precise spatial reporting would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from the road and car parks to bus facilities and roundabouts. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “But in 2010” and “Furthermore” help signal comparison and addition. This gives the account a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression more consistently clear, group related changes more deliberately and use precise references: for example, “it” in “it replaced with a large bus station” does not clearly identify the bus stops, while “the hospital road” and “the ring road” could be used consistently to orient the reader. Some transitions are also mechanical; clearer links between each 2007 feature and its 2010 replacement would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “access,” “car park,” “bus station,” “roundabouts” and “located,” so the main changes are understandable. There are also attempts to describe comparison, such as “remains the same” and “changed.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for map reporting: “access … was increased” is less suitable than describing access as reorganised or improved, and “entrances” does not accurately name the road connections shown. Spelling errors such as “rode” and “sarting” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location and change vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations; this will make the description more flexible and exact without changing its clear overall meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more developed sentences, including the contrast in “There were six bus stops … but it replaced with a large bus station.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence construction and grammatical control remain. For example, “it replaced with” needs a passive form (“they were replaced by”), and “in the both years” has an unnecessary article. The sentence “The car park … located in the south has changed only for the staff in 2010” lacks a clear grammatical structure and makes the relationship between the car park and its new designation difficult to follow. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with no space after the full stop in “2010.There.” Use complete clauses, check articles and passive forms, and proofread sentence boundaries.
