IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes made to the road access surrounding a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the road network surrounding the city hospital underwent significant improvements between 2007 and 2010, with the introduction of new access routes and changes to the existing road infrastructure.

In 2007, the city hospital was located at the centre, while the ring road was situated at the northern side the road. There was an parking area for both staff and the public which is at the south-eastern corner of the hospital.

In 2010, the city hospital remained unchanged in its orignial location at the cente of the area. A new layout for bus station was introduced, compared with 2007 that had sign post indicating bust stops. Similarly, two Roundabout was added before and after the hospital. By contrast, the parking area for both staff and public were seperated in 2010. The public car park is currently situated at the north-eastern corner, while the staff car park is at the south-east corner. In addition, city road remained unchanged..

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the overall change as an improvement to access and report several key differences: the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, two roundabouts were added, and parking was divided between staff and public. The hospital’s central position and City Road’s unchanged status are also noted. This gives a relevant overview and covers the main developments. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: in 2007, the Ring Road surrounded the hospital on its north, west and east sides, rather than being only on the northern side; and the new public car park was on the east side of the Ring Road, not simply at the hospital’s north-eastern corner. More precise descriptions of the bus station’s connections and the roundabouts would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the two time periods. The contrast between the maps is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “By contrast,” and “In addition” help signal relationships. This provides coherent overall organisation. Some connections are less precise, however: “Similarly” does not clearly explain how the bus station relates to the roundabouts, and “compared with 2007 that had sign post indicating bust stops” makes the comparison awkward to follow. The final sentence also feels appended rather than integrated into the description. Use clearer references and group related changes—for example, describe the road junctions and bus facilities together, then explain the parking changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of map-description vocabulary, including “road network,” “access routes,” “introduced,” “separated,” and “remained unchanged.” These choices communicate the broad changes and show some flexibility beyond basic location words. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “a new layout for bus station,” “sign post indicating bust stops,” and “added before and after the hospital.” Spelling errors in “orignial,” “cente,” “seperated,” and “bust” also reduce accuracy. Choose established terms such as “bus station,” “bus stops,” and “roundabouts at the northern and southern junctions,” and check spelling carefully. More exact directional vocabulary would also help distinguish the public car park east of the Ring Road from the staff car park east of Hospital Road.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview clause “with the introduction of new access routes” and the contrastive sentence beginning “By contrast.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the ring road was situated at the northern side the road” is missing a preposition and gives an incomplete location; “There was an parking area … which is” mixes article use and tense; and “two Roundabout was added” has a number-agreement error. The sentence about the bus station and 2007 stops is also structurally difficult to follow. Use consistent past tense for the maps, check singular/plural agreement, and build comparisons with complete clauses. Proofread punctuation too, as the final sentence ends with two full stops.
