IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps compare the differences of the surrounding of the City hospitals.
Overall, roundabouts were introduced on the junctions of road. Combined parking has been separated for public and staff and bus station was constructed adjacent to the hospitals road.
In 2007, Hospital road connected to the hospitals directly and parking area was allocated right side of the Hospital roads. Six stops were placed around the road ,three on the right and three on the left side.
In 2010, the two roundabouts were introduced on the junctions of hospital Rd while Staff parking space has divided in to two sub parking namely Staff car park and Public car park . The old parking has been dedicated for staff parking only whereas public car park has been moved to east of the City hospital. Furthermore, Bus station was introduced between the two roundabouts and old bus stops had been demolished. However Ring road and City road were remained the same and located on north of hospital and east side of the first roundabout .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main changes: the junctions became roundabouts, the shared parking was divided by user, bus stops were replaced by a bus station, and a public car park was added. The overview captures these broad developments, and most details are grounded in the maps. Some descriptions are less precise, however. The hospital itself is not shown as directly connected to Hospital Road; the road runs between the Ring Road and City Road. The bus station is west of Hospital Road, rather than simply “between” the roundabouts, and the final claim about Ring Road and City Road being north and east of the roundabout is inaccurate. More exact spatial comparisons and a clearer account of what remained unchanged would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an overview followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and transitions such as “In 2007,” “In 2010,” and “Furthermore” help signal sequence. However, some links between ideas are unclear or mechanically joined. The long final sentence combines the parking changes, bus station, removed stops, and unchanged roads, making the relationships difficult to follow. “However” does not clearly contrast with the preceding point, and “the hospitals road” is an unclear reference. Use shorter sentences and group related changes together—for example, describe parking in one section and transport access in another.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “junctions,” “allocated,” “dedicated,” and “demolished,” and the reader can generally understand the changes being described. There is some attempt to vary wording, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing maps: “the differences of the surrounding,” “parking space has divided in to two sub parking,” and “bus station was constructed adjacent to the hospitals road.” “Moved” also suggests the public car park itself was relocated, whereas a new public car park was added. Aim for accurate collocations and concise location language, such as “the shared car park was redesignated for staff” and “a public car park was added east of the Ring Road.” Check spacing and spelling conventions as well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and additions with “Furthermore.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “parking space has divided” needs a passive form (“was divided”), while “the old parking has been dedicated” shifts tense unnecessarily in a description of past map changes. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence construction in “the hospitals road,” “Ring road and City road were remained,” and “the two roundabouts were introduced on the junctions.” Use consistent past-tense forms and check subject–verb agreement and passive constructions. Breaking up the final sentence would also help you control punctuation and sentence structure.
