IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two layouts demonstrates the road to reach a urban hospital in 2007 and 2010.

In 2007, the map was quite simple to access the city hospital. When we look at the the diagram in the southern part the main road was shown. Moreover, beside a city road a hospital lane was displayed and along side of the lane the car park specially for the staff and public was highlighted. When we look at the north side a city hospital was surrounded by the ring road. Finally, at the east there was a small bus stop.

Turning on another layout, the major changes were a huge public was constructed beside a city hospital. Moreover, the two crossways was build on the main city road and on the ring road. Small bus stand was demolished and new large bus stop was constructed with the two lane connected with the roads. In addition, staff parking was build beside the hospital road. In the end, at the east one roundabout was established.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying key changes such as the new bus station, roundabouts, and parking facilities. However, the overview is missing; a successful Task 1 response must include a clear summary of the overall trends or significant changes observed between the two years. While the description of the 2007 and 2010 layouts is generally accurate, the lack of an overview and the somewhat mechanical listing of features prevent it from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure you synthesize the information rather than just listing details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is appropriate for this task. There is a logical progression from the 2007 map to the 2010 map. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'Moreover' and 'In addition'. Some transitions, like 'Turning on another layout', are slightly unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better sentence integration to create a smoother narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a clear description of the maps. You use relevant terms like 'demolished', 'constructed', and 'roundabout'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the two crossways was build' (should be 'built') and 'a huge public was constructed' (which is unclear; perhaps 'a huge public car park'). The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptive verbs. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to urban planning and spatial relationships.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The two layouts demonstrates', 'the two crossways was build') and incorrect verb forms ('staff parking was build'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of past tense when describing the changes that occurred between 2007 and 2010.
