Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the changes to car parking and the addition of roundabouts and a bus station. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main changes are identified, the reporting is occasionally disjointed, and the comparison between 2007 and 2010 could be more integrated. The information is accurate, but the lack of a cohesive summary of the overall trends limits the score. The response addresses the task requirements but lacks the depth of analysis expected for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'However' and 'In 2010'. Some transitions are abrupt, and the logical progression between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the locations of the car parks. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the lack of variety in linking words and the somewhat disjointed flow of ideas prevent a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes in infrastructure. There are several spelling errors, such as 'infrasturcture', 'saparated', and 'transofrmation', which are distracting. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic terms like 'made' or 'remains'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the presence of spelling mistakes indicate a need for a wider range of vocabulary and better attention to detail. The student manages to convey the necessary information, but the lexical control is inconsistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with articles ('the roundabout hospital road'), subject-verb agreement ('The maps illustrates'), and tense consistency. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization after commas. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and ensuring that articles are used correctly when describing locations.
