Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response identifies the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the changes to the car park. However, the report lacks precision and clarity. For example, the description of the bus station as 'bigger than before' is vague, and the mention of 'six bus tops' (likely bus stops) in 2007 is not clearly contrasted with the 2010 layout. The overview is somewhat disjointed and lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes. To improve, ensure that all key features are clearly described with accurate spatial references and that the comparison between the two years is more systematic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'In 2007' and 'In 2010' at the start of sentences. Some transitions, like 'Overall, to give a quick view so many changes', are awkward and do not flow naturally. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to track which specific road or facility is being discussed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear logical progression between sentences would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is limited and sometimes inaccurate, which occasionally hinders the clarity of the report. Phrases like 'these things are newly added' and 'small space for public and staff car park' are simplistic. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'bus tops' instead of 'bus stops'. While the student attempts to describe the map features, the range of vocabulary is not sufficient to demonstrate flexibility or precision. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more specific terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'constructed', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'junction'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The given map illustrate', 'There were 2 roundabout') and incorrect verb tenses ('it added now'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and capitalization errors (e.g., 'In 2007, does not have'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent tense usage and correct sentence construction will help improve the accuracy and overall quality of the writing.
