IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Between 2007 and 2010, great construction resulted in several upgrades to the road access to a city hospital, directly affecting the quality of the area.

Previously, the land lacked separate designated parking lots for staff and the public. Rather, they both parked in the same, small area, which ought to cause immense crowds and discomfort. It did not help that there were three bus stops in the same vicinity. However, later in 2010, this issue was regarded, and a separate large parking lot was constructed for the patients right beside the City Hospital. The bus stops were also removed, increasing the area of the staff car park.

Additionally, a defined bus station was built, reducing the need for individual bus stops that were previously prevalent in the 2007 model. Over and above that, the roads were altered to include several roundabouts, which in turn made transportation within the area easier and much more accessible, with less risk of getting into an accident thanks to the rounded edges.

In conclusion, several changes were made within the 3-year period that ultimately proved to be quite beneficial to the public. The newer design is also a lot more practical and comfortable compared to the older one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the changes to parking arrangements and the introduction of roundabouts. You provided a clear overview and compared the two time periods effectively. However, to reach a higher band, ensure you maintain a strictly objective tone. Phrases like 'which ought to cause immense crowds and discomfort' and 'thanks to the rounded edges' are subjective interpretations rather than factual reporting of the visual data. While you covered the key changes, ensure that all descriptions remain grounded in the provided information without adding personal commentary or speculation about the quality of the area.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

Your response is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and you use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Previously', 'However', 'Additionally', and 'Over and above that' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the hospital's development. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. This demonstrates a good command of organizational structure suitable for an Academic Task 1 response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'designated', 'vicinity', 'prevalent', and 'accessible'. There is some awareness of collocation, although some word choices are slightly informal or imprecise for a formal report, such as 'great construction' or 'the 2007 model'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe spatial changes (e.g., 'expanded', 'reconfigured', 'integrated'). Your spelling is accurate, and the vocabulary used is adequate to convey your meaning clearly without any significant errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over grammar, and most of your sentences are error-free. You successfully use passive voice constructions, such as 'a separate large parking lot was constructed' and 'the bus stops were also removed', which is appropriate for this type of task. While there are a few minor issues with phrasing, such as 'this issue was regarded' (which is slightly unnatural), these do not impede communication. Your punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the clarity of your writing.
