IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The two maps illustrate how road access to the City Hospital changed between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the hospital become became much more accessible by 2010. The main developments were the construction of two roundabouts, the separation of staff and public parking, and the addition of a bus station. At the same time, several bus stops were removed.

In 2007, the hospital was located off a ring road and could only be reached via hospital road, which connected to City Road in the south. There was one combined car park for both staff and the public on the east side of Hospital Road, and a row of six bus stops ran along the western side of the road.

By 2010,significant changes had been made to improve traffic flow. A roundabout was built at the junction of the hospital road and the city road, and another one was added directly outside the hospital entrance. The single car park was replaced with two separate facilities: a public car park to the east of the hospital and a staff car park to south. Furthermore, the bus stops were removed and replaced with a dedicated bus station situated to the west of Hospital Road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends, specifically noting the increased accessibility and the key infrastructure changes like the roundabouts and parking separation. The report is well-structured, selecting and highlighting the most significant features of the maps. Comparisons are made accurately between 2007 and 2010, such as the transition from a combined car park to separate facilities. The information is logically grouped, and the summary is accurate based on the provided visual data. No key features were omitted, and the response maintains a professional, objective tone throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'At the same time', 'In 2007', 'By 2010', and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the changes. The flow of information is smooth, and each sentence contributes to the overall summary without unnecessary repetition. The referencing is clear, and the relationship between the different infrastructure elements is well-managed, ensuring the reader can easily follow the chronological development of the hospital's road access.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have demonstrated a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a task of this nature. Phrases like 'dedicated bus station', 'significant changes', and 'improve traffic flow' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated synonyms or collocations to describe the changes in infrastructure. For instance, instead of 'built' or 'added', you could use 'constructed', 'implemented', or 'integrated'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choice is consistently appropriate for the context of describing map changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of passive voice ('was built', 'were removed') which is essential for this type of task. There is a minor slip in the second sentence ('the hospital become became'), but this is a rare error and does not impede communication. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to manage complex ideas. The control over tense usage—shifting from the past state in 2007 to the completed changes by 2010—is handled with precision, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
