IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps in the figures demonstrate the road access to a city hospital. The maps were shown about the road access in 2007 and 2010
From the maps, we could illustrate that the road access has been change completely new version. In map 2007, the road access was direct from main roads whereas in 2010 it varies in different access in roads. Similarly, the road access was upgraded to different parking for different vehicles. Furthermore, there were two ring roads established in 2010 giving access to city hospital connecting with parking. In pervious city hospital road access, there was large ring road covering city hospital which remains in same state in 2010. Additionally, in the first map the parking was just between big ring road and city road beside of hospital road in east-south direction which staff car parking in 2010.
Along the graph, we could observe that the major changes had been parking car and addition to ring roads in city road and hospital road

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response identifies the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the changes to parking facilities. However, the description is often unclear and lacks precision. For example, the statement that the road access has been 'change completely new version' is vague and grammatically incorrect. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is attempted, but the lack of clear spatial referencing (e.g., north, south, east, west) makes it difficult for the reader to follow the changes. While the main trends are identified, the lack of detail and the confusing explanation of the road layout prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical or misused, such as 'Along the graph' to introduce a summary, which is inappropriate for a map task. Referencing is also problematic; phrases like 'in pervious city hospital road access' are confusing and do not clearly link back to the 2007 map. The overall flow is hindered by these issues, making the text feel somewhat repetitive and difficult to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'road access' and 'big ring road', which are repeated frequently. Some word choices are awkward or incorrect, such as 'illustrate' when referring to the maps, or 'pervious' instead of 'previous'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an attempt to use precise terminology related to urban planning or map description. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the frequent errors in word choice restrict the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are frequent issues with verb tense consistency (e.g., 'has been change', 'were shown'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are poorly constructed, such as 'in 2010 it varies in different access in roads'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty, leading to confusion. The control of grammar is inconsistent, and the errors are noticeable throughout the text, which is characteristic of the Band 5 level.
