IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps illustrates the hospital layout plan before and after changes in their design and some modification.

In 2007, there is no round about near the City hospital as staff and public can park vehicles in very congested parking and face many other difficulties. Thereafter, in 2010 the layout plan is completed modernized like as you can see in the second map staff and public are separated.

Moreover, bus stop is far away from the hospital they construct 2 roundabouts across the threshold of the hospital and bus station is now near the hospital to facilitate the public and city hospital staff. Furthermore, the traffic flows better in 2010 due to the roundabouts. Now the public feel much better due to that modification in architectural design of the building. Additionally, the main feature of city hospital is that the ring road is passes around the hospital, so everyone has the great opportunity to arrive in easily.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the task by describing the changes between 2007 and 2010. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial and relies on subjective commentary (e.g., 'public feel much better') rather than objective reporting of the visual data. While the main features like the roundabouts and the bus station are mentioned, the description lacks precision regarding the specific locations and the layout of the car parks. The response would benefit from a more structured approach, such as an overview paragraph that clearly highlights the most significant changes, followed by detailed comparisons of the specific features shown in the maps.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is somewhat disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally'), they are occasionally used in a mechanical or repetitive way. The transition between the description of the 2007 layout and the 2010 changes is abrupt. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved to ensure that each point follows logically from the previous one. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of information could be more cohesive to better guide the reader through the comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'layout plan is completed modernized' and 'ring road is passes around'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, you should focus on using more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'infrastructure', 'relocated', 'integrated', or 'accessibility'. The errors in word choice do not generally impede communication, but they do limit the sophistication of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'The given maps illustrates' (subject-verb agreement), 'like as you can see' (inappropriate phrasing), and 'ring road is passes' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice for describing changes would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
