Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of the roundabout, the change from bus stops to a bus station, and the division of parking areas. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The student describes the changes but lacks a clear, analytical comparison of the spatial layout. For instance, the mention of the 'ring road' is accurate, but the description of the road access could be more precise regarding the specific changes to the junctions. The overview is present but slightly repetitive in its phrasing. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on grouping information more logically and providing a more detailed comparison of the infrastructure changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of these are used somewhat mechanically or inappropriately (e.g., 'To commence with' is better suited for an essay than a report). The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother. The structure is logical, moving from an introduction to the main features and a summary, which meets the requirements for a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the changes in the hospital infrastructure. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'established' and 'advanced', but there are also noticeable errors in word choice and form, such as 'chanage' (spelling) and 'build' used instead of 'built'. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the repetition of basic verbs and the lack of precise terminology for map features (e.g., describing the roundabout or road layout) limit the score. Improving accuracy in word forms and expanding the range of descriptive verbs would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and passive voice constructions, such as 'city hospital build in 2010' (should be 'built') and 'There was a six bus stop' (should be 'six bus stops'). Subject-verb agreement is also inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but the control over these is inconsistent. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy, especially regarding tense and pluralization, is essential for improvement.
