IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
The maps illustrate the changes made to the road access around a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road system became more organized by 2010. The main changes included the construction of two roundabouts, the addition of a bus station, and the separation of staff and public parking areas.
In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by a ring road, which was connected to City Road by Hospital Road. There were six bus stops, with three located on each side of Hospital Road. In addition, there was a single car park to the east of Hospital Road, which was shared by both staff and the public.
By 2010, the layout had changed considerably. Two roundabouts were built, one at the junction of Hospital Road and City Road and another at the entrance to the hospital. The bus stops were removed and replaced by a bus station on the west side of Hospital Road, connected to both roundabouts. Furthermore, the original shared car park became a staff car park, while a new public car park was constructed to the east of the hospital. This new parking area was directly connected to the ring road, allowing public vehicles to enter without using Hospital Road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 9.0
The response is excellent. You have clearly identified all the main features of the maps, including the construction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the changes to parking arrangements. The overview is concise and effectively highlights the key trends. You have successfully compared the 2007 and 2010 layouts, providing specific details such as the relocation of the public car park and the change in access routes. The information is accurate and well-selected, meeting all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the 2007 state, and the 2010 changes. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'By 2010', which help the reader follow the development of the information. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and changes, such as 'layout', 'junction', 'constructed', and 'relocated'. The language is precise and natural. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or descriptive phrases could elevate the response further, but the current level is already very strong for this task type.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 9.0
The grammar is highly accurate with a variety of complex structures used correctly, such as 'which was connected to City Road' and 'allowing public vehicles to enter without using Hospital Road'. The sentence structures are varied and error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over complex grammatical forms is consistent, and there are no errors that impede communication.
