IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given two maps outline the structure of city road from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, the road layout becomes more organized in 2010. However, the addition of a bus station and a car parking area allow public with more amenities. The structure of road converted into roundabout.
In 2007, the hospital was occupied by several facility centers. Beginning from city road, if you go straight from there, you reached to hospital road. On the left and right side of road, there is car parking area for both staffs and public. Continuing the hospital road reached you towards city hospital, that is situated in the middle of map. Additionally, city hospital is surrounded by ring road. Far from there, bus stop is located there.
The diagram of 2010 hospital is much more modernized. Initially, the route begins at city road, go straight ahead, passes through a roundabout. On the left hand of hospital road, a substantial area is occupied by bus station. Similarly, on the right hand, car parking is available for staff. There is again another roundabout, when you go through it, you would finally reach to city hospital. On the left hand of hospital, there is public car park. Previously, car parking was together for both public and staff. The area looked quite small.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, including the addition of roundabouts and the separation of parking facilities. However, the description is somewhat informal and occasionally lacks precision. For instance, phrases like 'if you go straight from there' are conversational rather than analytical. While the main changes are identified, the comparison between the two years could be more effectively highlighted by focusing on the spatial changes rather than narrating a journey. The overview is present but could be more detailed regarding the specific layout changes to better meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the 2007 and 2010 maps respectively. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In 2007', 'Additionally', and 'Similarly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. The progression of information is generally clear, though the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking words to connect the spatial descriptions more fluidly. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for a clear description of the maps. There are attempts to use topic-specific language such as 'roundabout', 'amenities', and 'modernized'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'the structure of road converted into roundabout' (should be 'the road layout was converted into a roundabout') and 'public with more amenities' (should be 'provide the public with more amenities'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles ('the structure of city road', 'on the left hand of hospital') and verb tense consistency ('the road layout becomes' vs 'the hospital was occupied'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'Continuing the hospital road reached you towards city hospital'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions would improve the accuracy of the writing.
