IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two maps provides information regarding the changes in a city hospital after 3 years.

Overall, it is clear that there was new function added after 3 years, while some places remained unchanged over the given period of time.

To commence with, in 2007 there was a city road in the South direction, while ring road was in the North direction. Moreover, there was a car parking near the hospital road as well as a city hospital was surrounded by ring road. A part from this, there was 6 bus stops attached to hospital road.

Moving ahead, in 2010 the city road and ring road remained unchanged, while there was an addition of bus station, which was attached to roundabout. Additionally, a staff car park remained same, but a public car park was added near to ring road. In addition, the location of a city hospital was same. In contrast there was also addition of roundabout in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the addition of the roundabout, the new bus station, and the public car park. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends. However, the description of the 2007 layout is slightly inaccurate; for instance, stating the hospital was 'surrounded' by the ring road is not fully supported by the visual evidence. While the main features are reported, the comparison could be more analytical by focusing on the flow of traffic or the specific locations relative to the hospital. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moving ahead', and 'In contrast' helps guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. The progression of ideas is clear, though the referencing of specific locations could be more precise to improve the flow of the description.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'roundabout', 'ring road', and 'city hospital'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'new function added' (which is vague) and 'A part from this' (should be 'Apart from this'). The range is sufficient to convey the necessary information, but there is a lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. The use of 'remained same' is also slightly unnatural; 'remained the same' or 'remained unchanged' would be better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The two maps provides', 'there was 6 bus stops') and missing articles ('a city road', 'a staff car park'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on pluralization rules and the correct use of articles when describing map features. The sentence structures are functional but lack the variety and precision required for higher bands.
