Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the bus station, the new roundabouts, and the parking arrangements. However, the overview is slightly confusing, as it mentions the 'construction of two maps' instead of referring to the road infrastructure. While the main trends are identified, the description of the 2007 layout is somewhat imprecise, and the report lacks a clear, professional summary of the overall transformation. The response addresses the task requirements, but the lack of clarity in the overview and some minor inaccuracies in reporting the spatial details prevent it from reaching a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to the 2007 layout and then the 2010 changes. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Two were added' lacks a clear subject, making the connection between sentences disjointed. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow of information is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, which makes the progression of ideas feel less smooth. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring clear referencing would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes in the road network. There are some attempts at more specific terminology, such as 'junction' and 'infrastructure' (implied), but the range is limited. There are also noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'around' instead of 'surrounded' and 'improve' instead of 'improved'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of precision. To improve, the student should focus on using more varied and accurate descriptive language related to maps and urban planning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a new bus station'), incorrect verb forms ('road system had been improve'), and punctuation issues. Some sentences are fragmented or lack necessary subjects, such as 'Two were added'. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over complex structures. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent tense usage, and basic sentence construction to improve accuracy.
