Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps compare the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. They show several changes made to the transport system and parking facilities around the hospital.
Overall, the hospital became more accessible in 2010. The most significant changes were the construction of two roundabouts a new bus station and separate car parks for staff and the public. in addition, the bus stops were removed.
In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by a ring road and connected to the City Road by Hospital Road. There were six bus stops, with three on each side of Hospital Road. A single car park, which was used by both staff and the public, was located on the east side of Hospital Road, just below the hospital.
By 2010 two roundabouts had been built at both ends of Hospital Road. The bus stops were replaced by a bus station on the west side of the road, connected to both roundabouts. The old car park was converted into a staff car park, While new public car park was constructed to the east of the hospital and could be reached from the ring road. These changes improved traffic flow and provided better access to the hospital for both visitors and staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively addresses all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the construction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the changes to parking facilities. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is clear, and the overview provides a concise summary of the primary trends. The information is well-selected and accurately reflects the provided maps. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details are fully integrated into the narrative flow, but overall, this is a comprehensive and accurate report that meets all the criteria for a high score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the overview from the detailed descriptions of 2007 and 2010. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By 2010', and 'While' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the comparison between the two time periods. There is a minor issue with punctuation, such as the missing comma after 'In 2010' and the capitalization of 'While' mid-sentence, but these do not significantly disrupt the coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'accessible', 'converted', 'constructed', and 'transport system'. The terminology is accurate and appropriate for a report on map changes. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it lacks a few more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and fits the academic context well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of passive voice ('had been built', 'were replaced') and subordinate clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There are a few minor mechanical errors, such as missing commas after introductory phrases (e.g., 'By 2010') and a capitalization error ('While'). Despite these small slips, the grammatical control is strong, and the errors do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
