IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps under represents path of transportation to a urban health centre in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, there are very minor changes in the road access to the hospital in almost quarter of half of a decade.

In the first map we see that there is only one way from the city road to the hospital which is hospital road but after three years there are various changes like we got a access to the bus station which is on the west side when you entered the hospital road and there is also a staff car parking in the east of hospital road afterwards when you get on the ring road and go to your right side there is a public car parking in your east and there were also added roundabouts on city road and on the ring road that means you can access the health centre from any road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, noting the addition of the bus station, staff parking, public parking, and roundabouts. However, the description is somewhat informal and lacks a clear, professional analytical tone. The overview is present but could be more precise; stating 'almost quarter of half of a decade' is confusing and inaccurate (the period is three years). While the key changes are identified, the spatial descriptions (e.g., 'when you entered the hospital road') are slightly conversational rather than objective. To improve, focus on using more precise geographical language and ensuring the overview clearly highlights the most significant transformations, such as the improved accessibility via roundabouts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into two paragraphs, which is a good start, but the second paragraph is a single, very long, run-on sentence. This makes the text difficult to follow and impacts the logical flow. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; the text relies heavily on 'and' to connect clauses. To reach a higher band, you should break the information into smaller, distinct sentences and use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to guide the reader through the changes between 2007 and 2010.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is quite repetitive and lacks precision. Phrases like 'there are various changes' and 'there is also' are used repeatedly. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'path of transportation' instead of 'road access' or 'transport infrastructure'. The attempt to describe the time frame ('quarter of half of a decade') is awkward and mathematically unclear. To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to urban planning, such as 'infrastructure', 'accessibility', 'junctions', and 'designated areas'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammar is characterized by a reliance on simple sentence structures and a lack of complex forms. There are several errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'The two maps under represents' (should be 'represent') and 'we got a access' (should be 'access was provided'). The punctuation is also problematic, particularly the lack of full stops in the second paragraph, which results in a run-on sentence. To improve, focus on using a mix of simple and complex sentences and ensure that you use correct punctuation to separate distinct ideas.
