IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The two maps illustrate the changes made to the access road leading to the city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the most significant developments were the construction of two roundabouts and a new bus station. In addition, the original shared car park was converted into a staff car park, while a separate public car park was built to the east of the hospital.
In 2007, the hospital was directly connected to the City Road by Hospital Road, with no roundabouts along the route. By 2010, two roundabouts had been added to improve traffic flow. The first roundabout was constructed at the junction of City Road and Hospital Road, while the second was built near the hospital entrance. These two roundabouts were linked by a new ring road surrounding the hospital.
Another major change was the addition of a bus station to the west of the hospital in 2010. This new facility was connected to the ring road and included six bus stops, making public transport more accessible. In contrast, there was no dedicated bus station in 2007.
Regarding parking facilities, in 2007 there was only one car park used by both staff and visitors. However, by 2010, this parking area had been converted into a staff-only car park. A new public car park was also constructed to the east of the hospital and was connected to the ring road.
