IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Changes to road access to a city hospital is provided in maps in the year 2007 and 2010.

The new version contains more facilities and provides more accesibility to the hospital, linking bus station and city road.

In 2007 there was a combined car parking space for both staff and the public on the right side of hospital road. This is later separated for both, facilitating public with a separate car park area on the east side of hospital.

Moreover in 2007 there was no road that connected the bus stop and central hospital of the city, causing trouble for public, who use to travell by bus to reach the hospital. Later in 2010, this is improved by changing the location of bus stop to the west side of hospital road and link it to the hospital via a junction connected to round about.

Two new round about are established in 2010 to facilitate smooth traffic flow and connect mutiple areas to hospital such as bus station and road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the changes to parking, the bus stop relocation, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes, such as the overall improvement in traffic flow. While the key information is reported, some details are slightly under-developed. For example, the description of the road network changes could be more precise regarding the specific locations of the new roundabouts. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, but it would benefit from a more cohesive summary of the trends observed between 2007 and 2010.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the map changes. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In 2007', and 'Later in 2010' helps to guide the reader through the timeline. However, the paragraphing is slightly fragmented, with some very short paragraphs that could be better integrated. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Despite these minor issues, the information is presented in a clear, logical sequence that is easy to follow throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'accessibility', 'facilitating', and 'traffic flow' being used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'causing trouble for public' and 'who use to travell'. The spelling error 'travell' and the misuse of 'mutiple' (multiple) indicate a need for more careful proofreading. While the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to urban planning would improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Changes to road access... is provided' (subject-verb agreement), 'Two new round about are established' (pluralization), and 'facilitating public' (missing article). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The use of passive voice is appropriate for this type of task, but the control over articles and plural forms needs improvement. More attention to sentence-level accuracy and proofreading for basic errors would enhance the overall grammatical performance.
