Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pair of maps depicts the information about road access to a city hospital in the years 2007 and 2010.
Overall, it is crystal clear that many buildings were destroyed and new one are set-up after construction however, city hospital remains the same according to the given period of time.
At the fleeting glance, in 2007, the hospital was accessed from the south via hospital road, which connected directly to city road. By 2010, two roundabouts were constructed on hospital road, one at the intersection with city road and another just south of the hospital building. Furthermore, the bus stops were consolidated into a single bus station located to the west of the main road, accessed via the northern roundabout.
Moving further, parking and open space also changed significantly, In 2007, a single car park on the eastern side of the hospital road served both staff and the public. By 2010, this original car park was designated exclusively for hospital staff. To compensate, a new public car park was constructed on the eastern side of the hospital, which was previously an open area. Additionally, a new roundabout was added to the intersection of City road and Ring Road in the southern corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, including the addition of roundabouts, the consolidation of bus stops, and the changes to parking facilities. You have made relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010, which is essential for this task. However, the overview is slightly weak; stating that 'many buildings were destroyed' is an over-generalization, as the map primarily shows changes to infrastructure and access rather than the destruction of buildings. To improve, ensure your overview focuses on the most significant trends, such as the increased complexity of the road network and the reorganization of parking and public transport access.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme (road access and parking). You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moving further', and 'By 2010' to guide the reader through the changes. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For instance, the second paragraph is a bit brief and could be better integrated. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of referencing is generally effective, though some minor improvements in the flow between sentences would elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'consolidated', 'designated', and 'intersection' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'new one are set-up', which is grammatically and lexically awkward. Additionally, 'At the fleeting glance' is an unnatural collocation; 'At a glance' or 'Overall' would be more standard. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, there is room for more precision in describing spatial relationships and infrastructure changes to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'new one are set-up' should be 'new ones were set up', and 'city hospital remains the same' should be 'the city hospital remained the same' to maintain consistent past tense. There are also some punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'changed significantly, In 2007'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and tense consistency will help improve your accuracy.
