The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The maps illustrate changes made to the road access system around a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the area became more organized and accessible by 2010. The main developments included the construction of two roundabouts, the addition of a bus station, and the separation of staff and public parking facilities.
In 2007, the hospital was surrounded by a ring road, which was connected to City Road by Hospital Road running from south to north. There were six bus stops located on both sides of Hospital Road. In addition, a single car park serving both staff and the public was situated to the east of Hospital Road, between the hospital and City Road.
By 2010, significant changes had been made. The bus stops along Hospital Road were removed and replaced by a bus station on the western side of the road. This bus station was linked to the ring road by a new access road. Furthermore, two roundabouts were constructed: one at the junction of Hospital Road and City Road, and another where Hospital Road met the ring road.
The parking arrangements were also altered. The former shared car park was converted into a staff car park, while a larger public car park was built on the eastern side of the hospital and connected directly to the ring road.
