IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The map illustrates the changes made in access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Looking from a overall perceptive, there were no major changes made to the city road and hospital road and while there has been a construction of bus station, the car park of public and staff are separated as they were merge before.

At a fleeting glance it is clearly evident that construction of two roundabouts has been done in 2010 which are connected to the newly constructed bus station that did not existed back in 2007 as there were only six bus stops in the east and west side of hospital road.

Moving further, the separation of public and staff car park has been done, as in 2010 previous space has been completely occupied by staff park and public car park has constructed on the east side of city hospital and is also connected with the ring road which now has three connections with the infrastructure.

It can be concluded that the city hospital's infrastructure has become more organised and established in 2010 than in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the addition of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the reorganization of car parks. However, the description is occasionally imprecise. For instance, stating that the public car park 'has constructed' is grammatically incorrect and confusing, and the claim that the car parks were 'merge before' is slightly inaccurate based on the visual evidence. While the overview is present, it could be more clearly articulated to highlight the most significant changes. The response successfully identifies the key trends, but the lack of precision in describing the spatial changes limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the map changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking from a overall perceptive', 'At a fleeting glance', and 'Moving further' are used to guide the reader. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as in the second paragraph where the sentence structure becomes convoluted. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, but the progression could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'infrastructure', 'occupied', and 'roundabouts' used correctly. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'perceptive' instead of 'perspective', 'merge' instead of 'merged', and 'staff park' instead of 'staff car park'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more accurate collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('did not existed'), incorrect passive voice construction ('has constructed' instead of 'was constructed'), and missing articles. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and article placement would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
