Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the changes to the car park, the addition of road junctions, and the relocation of the bus station. However, the description is sometimes imprecise. For example, stating the bus station was 'demolished' is an over-interpretation of the visual data, and the location of the new bus station is described in a slightly confusing manner. While the main trends are identified, the report lacks a clear, professional summary of the overall changes. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant transformations—such as the expansion of road infrastructure—rather than just listing individual changes. The response meets the requirements but lacks the analytical depth expected for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or awkward. Phrases like 'At a fleeting glance, to began with' and 'In the following' are used incorrectly or sound unnatural, which disrupts the flow of the text. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the location of the new car park and the bus station. To improve, focus on using transition signals that logically connect ideas rather than just acting as fillers. The progression of information is generally logical, but the lack of sophisticated linking devices limits the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'development took place widely' and 'separation caused in 2010'. The use of 'crystal clear' is too informal for an academic report. Additionally, there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'in the front of hospital' instead of 'in front of the hospital'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to maps and urban planning, such as 'relocated', 'constructed', 'expanded', or 'transformed', and avoid informal or conversational expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include '2 road junction build allows to give way', 'which may caused difficulties', and 'separation caused in 2010'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. The control over verb tenses and passive voice is inconsistent, which is problematic when describing changes over time. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles ('the hospital') and incorrect verb forms will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
