IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

These two maps below illustrate the change of a road to a hospital between 2007 and 2010.

In 2007, the hospital was situated at the center of the site, flanked by Ring Road to the north and City Road to the south. A single, undivided car park designated for both staff and public use occupied the western side of the hospital, directly adjacent to the main building. Along the southern boundary on City Road, there was only a basic bus stop, with no dedicated turning or waiting area for buses. Access to the hospital from City Road was via a simple junction without any traffic management features.

By 2010, the car park had been completely reorganized the previous shared facility was replaced by two separate, clearly demarcated zones — a smaller staff car park still located on the west side immediately next to the hospital, and a much larger public car park positioned further west, away from the building. The most noticeable addition was the construction of a roundabout at the junction where City Road meets the hospital entrance, which replaced the former simple access point. Additionally, the former bus stop on City Road was upgraded to a full bus station, equipped with its own access road connecting directly to the new roundabout, thereby improving traffic flow and separating bus movements from private vehicle access.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response is excellent and fully addresses all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features of the maps, such as the reorganization of the car park and the infrastructure upgrades like the roundabout and bus station. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is clear and well-supported by specific details from the maps. You have effectively highlighted the transition from a shared car park to separate zones and the improved traffic management, which demonstrates a high level of analytical skill. The overview is integrated well into the body paragraphs, providing a clear summary of the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the 2007 layout to the 2010 changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two time periods, which helps the reader follow the development of the site. Cohesive devices such as 'By 2010', 'The most noticeable addition', and 'thereby' are used naturally to link ideas and show relationships between the changes. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is precise, ensuring that the reader can easily track the specific locations mentioned on the maps.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a wide and precise range of vocabulary appropriate for describing maps and spatial changes. Terms such as 'flanked by', 'undivided', 'demarcated zones', and 'traffic management features' are used accurately and contribute to a professional, academic tone. There is a high level of control over word choice and collocation, with no noticeable errors. The vocabulary is not only sufficient but also sophisticated, allowing for a clear and concise description of the site's evolution over the three-year period.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writing exhibits a wide range of complex structures, including participial phrases ('flanked by Ring Road', 'equipped with its own access road') and relative clauses. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation is excellent. There is a minor run-on sentence in the second paragraph ('...completely reorganized the previous shared facility was replaced...'), which could be corrected with a semicolon or a conjunction, but this is a rare slip that does not impede communication. Overall, the grammatical control is highly sophisticated.
