IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The visuals of the two diagrams of one of year 2077 and other is of 2010 illustrates the road access to a city hospital with other important feature of car parking and bus stop.

Let's begin with ring road across the city hospital is same in 2007 and 2010. In 2007 the hospital path is intersecting the main city route moreover the car parking for staff and public is on the right of the hospital road crossing the city road towards the hospital. While in 2010 it is modified and for the public car parking it is moved to the east of the hospital making a way in and out on ring road whereas the old area is now prohibited for public and it is only for the hospital staff. There are two roundabouts constructed on the Hospital road one where it intersects the city route and the other where it joins the ring road for the smooth traffic flow. Bus stop in 2010 is constructed opposite to the staff car parking connecting the with both roundabouts while in 2007 it is on the east of the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the ring road, car parking, roundabouts, and bus stops. However, the overview is missing; a summary should highlight the most significant changes, such as the introduction of roundabouts and the reorganization of parking facilities. The description of the 2007 map contains a factual error regarding the year (2077), which is distracting. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the two years could be more structured to clearly contrast the 'before' and 'after' states. The response is sufficient in detail but lacks a clear, cohesive overview statement to guide the reader through the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into two paragraphs, but the flow is somewhat mechanical. The transition between the 2007 and 2010 descriptions is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'moreover', 'while', and 'whereas', they are occasionally used inaccurately or result in awkward sentence structures. For instance, the sentence starting with 'Let's begin with...' is informal and not appropriate for an academic report. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logic within the second paragraph is cluttered, making it difficult to follow the spatial changes clearly. Improved use of linking phrases and a more logical progression of information would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several awkward collocations and phrasing issues, such as 'visuals of the two diagrams' and 'making a way in and out'. The use of 'prohibited' is slightly imprecise in this context; 'restricted' or 'designated' would be more appropriate. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'connecting the with both roundabouts', which is grammatically incomplete. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'situated', 'relocated', 'constructed', or 'adjacent to'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'the two diagrams of one of year 2077 and other is of 2010 illustrates', where subject-verb agreement is incorrect, and 'connecting the with both roundabouts', which is a fragmented phrase. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the lack of commas to separate clauses. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic agreement errors would be beneficial.
