Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the main features of the maps are identified, such as the changes to car parking and the addition of the bus station and roundabouts, the description is somewhat superficial. The overview is present but lacks sufficient detail to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response. The under-length nature of the essay means that the information is not fully developed, and the comparison between 2007 and 2010 could be more comprehensive to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'Lastly, ring road and city road remained stagnant'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the logical progression between sentences could be smoother. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the limited length prevents the development of a more sophisticated flow of ideas, leading to a somewhat fragmented presentation of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'connivence' (convenience) and 'stagnant' (which is not the most appropriate term for road infrastructure). The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, you should incorporate more precise terminology related to map descriptions, such as 'undergone transformation', 'relocated', or 'integrated'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect the clarity of the writing. For example, 'several new building has been connected' should be 'several new buildings have been connected', and 'public car park has been build' should be 'has been built'. There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and verb forms indicate a lack of control. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication.
