IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps display road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. After the year 2007 some major development has occoured in the area.

It is clear that a proper public car parking has been developed towards the east of the city hospital which was not in the year 2007. The bus stop has been removed and instead a proper bus station has been developed with the efficient road connectivity to both city road and hospital road.

Staff and public car parking were at the same place in the year 2007 which were developed as staff car parking only in the year 2010. At the place of 4 way intersection and hospital's 3 way intersection a efficient roundabout has been developed to reduce the risk of accident.

In conclusion, the map of 2010 is properly organiesed to minimize the risk of accident. There is also a proper development for the bus station and public car parking to reduce the amount of traffic in the area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the maps, such as the new public car park, the bus station, and the roundabouts. You have made relevant comparisons between 2007 and 2010, such as noting the change in car park usage and the removal of the bus stop. However, the report could be improved by providing more specific details regarding the location of the new roundabouts or the specific road names mentioned in the prompt. While the main trends are covered, the overview is somewhat brief and could be more analytical regarding the overall transformation of the site.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In conclusion' and 'instead', though the flow between sentences can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the description of changes from the summary. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied and sophisticated to improve the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'connectivity', 'intersection', and 'developed'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'occoured' (occurred) and 'organiesed' (organised), and some word choices are slightly repetitive or imprecise, such as using 'proper' multiple times. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and ensure accurate spelling of common academic vocabulary. The range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'a efficient roundabout' (an efficient) and 'which were developed as staff car parking only' (which was developed). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'at the place of 4 way intersection'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of article usage and subject-verb agreement.
