IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pictures illustrates changes in the the accessibility to hospital through road in year 2007 and 2010.
In year 2007, hospital was surrounded by a ring road. From the south of ring road, there was a single road across the bus stop. On the right of bus stand, car parking was available for hospital staff and visitors. This single road further connected to the main city road.
In year 2010, the health care facility upgraded with few infrastructures. There are two separate parking for public and staff. The staff parking is next to hospital on the right side while staff parking is on same place. Bus station shifted to left side of the hospital road which connected ring road and city road. Roundabouts are built in order to control traffic and avoid accidents at the beginning and starting of hospital road.
To summarize, the city hospital changed in context of separate car parking, bus station and roundabouts within 3 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, identifying the key changes such as the introduction of roundabouts, the relocation of the bus station, and the separation of parking facilities. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview that synthesizes the most significant trends. For instance, the summary at the end is brief and could have been more analytical. While all parts of the task are addressed, the development of the information is basic, and some comparisons are slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure the overview highlights the most striking changes rather than just listing them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each year, and a summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In year 2007', 'In year 2010', and 'To summarize', which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes repetitive, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the staff parking is next to hospital on the right side while staff parking is on same place', which is confusing and contradictory. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun referencing would enhance the cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the map features clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure' and 'facility'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'the the' (repetition) and 'the health care facility upgraded with few infrastructures' (which is slightly unnatural). The phrase 'at the beginning and starting of hospital road' is also redundant. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to map descriptions and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' before 'hospital', 'the' before 'bus stop') and awkward phrasing ('the given pictures illustrates' should be 'illustrate'). The sentence 'the staff parking is next to hospital on the right side while staff parking is on same place' contains a logical error and grammatical awkwardness. There is a reasonable attempt at complex structures, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve accuracy.
