IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
As shown in the map of 2007 about the road access to a city hospital in south there is a city road and in the middle of city road in north side road attach the city road to city hospital. Road that is link with city road to city hospital on the east side of the link road there is a car park for staff and public combine.
On the other hand in 2010 the city road has a round shape bypass through the traffic easily turn towards the city hospital as well as bus station but in 2007 the bus station is on the east side of hospital and the distance from hospital to bus stand is more. In the map of 2010 there are two car parking stands one is for the staff and other one is for the general public, so the public easily reach the hospital in emergency. The difference between the map of 2007 and 2010 there is another round bypass near the city hospital so the people can easily access the hospital who travel on the public transport and reach at bus station.
As some up there is a huge difference between two maps one is a 2007 and the other one is of 2010 road access to city hospital. According to the two maps there is more facilities in 2010 as compare to 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes between the two maps, but it struggles to clearly identify and report the main features. While you mention the roundabouts and the car parks, the description is often confusing and lacks precision. For example, the explanation of the road layout in 2007 is difficult to follow, and the comparison between the two years is not structured effectively. To improve, you should provide a clear overview of the most significant changes—such as the introduction of roundabouts and the separation of car parks—rather than listing details in a way that obscures the overall picture.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the phrase 'As some up' (likely intended as 'To sum up') and the repetitive use of 'In the map of...'. Referencing is also problematic, as it is often unclear which specific part of the map you are describing. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'road', 'city', and 'hospital'. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'round shape bypass' instead of 'roundabout' and 'car parking stands' instead of 'car parks'. To reach a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary related to maps and urban planning, such as 'intersection', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'infrastructure'. Focus on learning specific collocations to describe changes in diagrams.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with article usage (e.g., 'in south', 'in north side'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, making them difficult to parse. For instance, 'Road that is link with city road to city hospital on the east side of the link road there is a car park' is grammatically incoherent. You need to focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that your verbs and prepositions are used correctly to convey your meaning clearly.
