IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The set of maps illustrates acess to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
It can be observed that in 2007, there was only one road which had access to a city hospital. City road and hospital road had conjunction in south. There was a bus stop on both side of a hospital road (west-east). Car park was located in south-east corner of a city hospital. A city hospital was surrounded by a ring road.
It can be seen that after three years in 2010, public car park was moved to east side of a city hospital. Staff car park remained at the same position. Extra bus station was built in south west corner of city hospital. Hospital road was roundabout with a city hospital, city road and bus station.
Overall, although in the beginning there was less access to a city hospital, more access to a city hospital did with additional bus station and moving public car park.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the changes in car parks and the addition of the bus station. However, the description of the road layout is somewhat confusing and lacks precision. For instance, the phrase 'Hospital road was roundabout with a city hospital' is unclear and does not accurately describe the infrastructure changes. While the overall trend is identified, the report would benefit from more precise spatial language to describe the locations (e.g., using 'north-west' or 'adjacent to' more effectively). The overview is present but could be more clearly articulated to highlight the most significant changes, such as the improved accessibility for public transport.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from 2007 to 2010. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'It can be observed that' and 'It can be seen that' are used at the start of paragraphs, which makes the writing feel formulaic. The transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, and the logical flow within the second paragraph could be improved by better linking the changes to the road system with the changes to the car parks.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'conjunction in south' instead of 'junction in the south' and 'bus station was built in south west corner' where 'bus station' might be better described as a 'bus stop' or 'bus terminal'. The repetition of 'city hospital' throughout the text makes the writing feel slightly monotonous. Using a wider range of synonyms and more precise geographical terminology would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('on both side of a hospital road', 'in south-east corner') and awkward phrasing ('more access to a city hospital did with additional bus station'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. To improve, focus on the correct use of articles and prepositions when describing locations and ensure that sentence subjects and verbs agree clearly.
