IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans illustrate how the access to the City Hospital has changed by roadways.

Overall, the structure has been improved by separating the car parking of staff members and locals, also introducing to a new bus station that connects to nearby roundabouts for north and south entry as well as exit.

In 2007, a shared parking space at City Hospital served both staff and locals. This caused a big shortage of spots. Drivers could not find places to park. It also had six bus stops which locals could use to travel.

In 2010, the shared parking area was allocated as staff car parking only which was located in the southern area besides the hospital road leading to City Hospital from south to north, furthermore a brand new public car parking was introduced on the eastern direction of the city hospital. Instead of bus stops, a Bus station was developed on the south-west side of the City Hospital, it was connected to the main road and directly to roundabouts which reduced traffic and was more convenient.

In conclusion, the City Hospital has been developed since 2007, plus it has become more efficient, convenient for the locals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the changes to parking and the transport infrastructure. You successfully identified the shift from a shared parking area to separate staff and public parking, as well as the introduction of the new bus station. However, the analysis could be more precise; for instance, describing the location of the new public car park as simply 'on the eastern direction' is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial relationships are described with maximum clarity and that the comparison between 2007 and 2010 is fully integrated throughout the report rather than just listing features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two time periods. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'In 2010', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'also introducing to a new bus station' and 'furthermore a brand new public car parking'. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'allocated', 'infrastructure', and 'efficient'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'on the eastern direction' (should be 'to the east') and 'introducing to a new bus station' (should be 'introducing a new bus station'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. To improve, focus on using more precise prepositions and collocations related to map descriptions, such as 'situated to the east' or 'located on the eastern side'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the structure has been improved by separating the car parking of staff members and locals, also introducing to a new bus station'. This sentence is slightly run-on and lacks a clear subject for the second clause. Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as comma splices in the fourth paragraph. While the meaning is always clear, increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and refining punctuation would help you achieve a higher band score.
