IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Provided maps of 2007 and 2010 gives information about road access to a city hospital.

In 2007, there is main city road which directly connected to hospital road in the right, the main hospital road has some facilities like bus stop on both side of the road and on the eastern side of the hospital road there is staff and public parking area. this road has a way to city hospital which is surrounded by the ring road.

In 2010, the map is more developed then the previous.

The city road is now connected to the roundabout,

as the hospital road is located in the northern side with more facilities like bus station and staff car parking got separated individually on western and eastern side. City hospital got a roundabout to have easy access to the separated public parking connected to the ring road in the eastern side of the city hospital

In comparison, 2010 map is more relevant than 2007 map, which helps to get individual facilities according to the requirement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the addition of roundabouts and the relocation of parking facilities. However, the description is somewhat imprecise; for example, stating the hospital road is 'located in the northern side' is vague, and the explanation of the 2010 changes lacks clarity regarding the overall layout. While the main features are identified, the comparison is not fully developed, and the concluding sentence is subjective rather than analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that spatial relationships are described with greater precision and that the overview clearly highlights the most significant changes, such as the improved traffic flow via roundabouts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is limited and occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'the' to start sentences or phrases. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when describing the location of facilities in 2010. While there is an attempt to compare the two years, the transition between the description of the 2007 map and the 2010 map could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'road', 'hospital', and 'side'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'the map is more developed then the previous' (should be 'than') and 'got separated individually'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise collocations related to map descriptions. To improve, focus on using more descriptive verbs and nouns related to urban planning, such as 'constructed', 'relocated', 'integrated', or 'accessibility'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include missing articles ('the' before 'main city road'), incorrect verb tenses or forms ('City hospital got a roundabout'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are run-on or lack clear structure, which occasionally makes the meaning difficult to follow. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
