Student answer (Band 4.5)
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010 now I talk about this.
At the start, I want to talk about the road access in 2007 to the city hospital on the south side of the hospital is a city road and in the middle of the hospital and city road is a bus stop both side of the road and the public car park is right side of the bus stop and in 2007 the access of the hospital is very easy just cross the bus stop and reached the city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to complete the task. It provides a description of the 2007 map and begins the 2010 map, but the text ends abruptly mid-sentence ('the east side of the'). Because the response is incomplete, it does not provide a summary of the main features or a meaningful comparison between the two years. The introduction is also informal and includes meta-commentary ('now I talk about this'), which is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, you must ensure the entire task is addressed, including a clear overview of the main trends and a completed description of all data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay lacks a logical structure. The use of 'At the start' and 'Secondly' is mechanical and does not effectively guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is present but the content within the paragraphs is disorganized, focusing on listing details rather than grouping information logically (e.g., comparing the road layout or parking facilities across both years). The abrupt ending significantly disrupts the flow of information, leaving the reader without a conclusion or a complete description. Greater attention should be paid to using cohesive devices to link ideas rather than simply listing features.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. You rely heavily on basic directional language ('right side', 'left side', 'south side') and simple verbs like 'talk about' or 'reached'. There is no attempt to use more precise vocabulary related to maps or urban planning, such as 'intersect', 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'infrastructure'. The phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'the access of the hospital is very easy'. To reach a higher band, you need to incorporate a wider range of vocabulary that is specific to describing changes in diagrams and maps.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammar is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede clarity. There is a lack of complex sentence structures; most sentences are simple or run-on. Punctuation is largely absent, making the text difficult to read. Examples of errors include 'in the middle of the hospital and city road is a bus stop' (missing prepositions/articles) and 'the access of the hospital is very easy just cross the bus stop and reached' (incorrect tense consistency). You should focus on using a mix of simple and complex sentences and ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage throughout your writing.
