IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two maps illustrate how road access to a city hospital changed between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, access to the hospital was significantly improved by the addition of two roundabouts, a bus station, and separate parking facilities for staff and public.
An analysis of the maps reveals that two roundabouts were constructed at either end of Hospital Road, connecting it with Ring Road to the north and City Road to the south. In 2007, there was only one shared car park used by both staff and public on the east side of hospital road. However, by 2010, this parking areas had been split into separate facilities, with the staff car park located beside hospital road and larger public car park located on the east side and connected to the city hospital.
From the maps it is evident that the six bus stops located along Hospital Road in 2007, were removed and replaced by a bus station on the west side of Hospital Road in 2010.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively identifies and reports the main features of the maps, including the addition of roundabouts, the reconfiguration of parking, and the replacement of bus stops with a bus station. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant changes. The comparison between 2007 and 2010 is well-supported by specific details from the diagrams. All key information is covered, and the response maintains a focus on the task throughout. The information is accurately presented, and the comparison is logical and easy to follow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by theme (infrastructure and parking). Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In 2007', and 'by 2010' are used effectively to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is smooth. The referencing is generally clear, although the transition between the description of the roundabouts and the parking could be slightly more fluid. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terminology such as 'constructed', 'reconfigured', 'facilities', and 'replaced'. While the range is adequate, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or variety in descriptive language. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student could incorporate more precise collocations or varied synonyms to describe the changes in the layout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'this parking areas' (should be 'these parking areas') and the inconsistent capitalization of 'hospital road'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not hinder the reader's understanding. The use of passive voice to describe the construction and removal of features is appropriate for this type of report.
