IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two maps illustrates changes in road access to city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the area around the hospital was improved with two new roundabouts, a new bus station, and separate parking for the staff and the public, while the Ring Road and City Road stayed the same.

In 2007, Hospital Road linked the hospital directly to both the Ring Road and the City Road. There were several bus stops along Hospital Road, and staff and the public shared one car park. By 2010, things had changed a lot. Two roundabouts were built to one where Hospital Road meets the Ring Road and one where it meets the City Road to help traffic move more smoothly. The old bus stops were removed and replaced with one larger bus station, connected to roundabouts. The shared car park was also split into two: one for staff and one for the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the maps, including the addition of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the changes to parking facilities. You have provided a clear overview and supported it with specific details from the 2007 and 2010 maps. The comparison between the two years is well-handled, and the key changes are accurately reported. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial relationships are described with maximum precision; for instance, mentioning the specific location of the new bus station relative to the roundabouts would further enhance the clarity of your report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. The progression of information is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'in 2007', and 'by 2010' effectively to transition between ideas and timeframes. The paragraphing is appropriate for a report of this length. To improve, you could vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a repetitive structure, but overall, the flow of information is coherent and the logical sequencing is consistent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the changes clearly, using terms like 'linked', 'removed', 'replaced', and 'split'. The vocabulary is appropriate for a task describing map changes. While the range is adequate, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise academic collocations or descriptive adjectives to characterize the changes, such as 'transformed', 'facilitated', or 'designated'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the vocabulary used is accurate for the context provided.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error in the first sentence ('The two maps illustrates' should be 'illustrate'). Additionally, the phrase 'built to one where' is slightly awkward; 'built at the junctions where' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate this score.
