Student answer (Band 6.5)

the given two maps represents the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010, showing changes made over the 3-years period.

overall, the hospital area was significantly redeveloped to improve traffic flow. the main changes were the construction of two roundabouts, the separation of staff and public car parks, and replacement of bus stop with dedicated place. as a result, hospital road became more connected to both city road and ring road.

in 2007, hospital road ran straight between city road in the south and the ring road around the hospital. there were six bust stops along hospital road, and a single car park to the east for both staff and the public.

by 2010, major infrastructure was added. two roundabouts were built on hospital road. one at the junction with city road another near the hospital entrance. the original car park was split: a staff car park was located to the south of the hospital, while a new public car park was constructed to the east. additionally, all the bus stops were removed and replaced by a bus station to the west of hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the maps and provided a clear comparison between 2007 and 2010. You highlighted the key developments, such as the roundabouts, the reorganization of car parks, and the new bus station. The overview is concise and effectively summarizes the major trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are precise; for example, you mentioned the bus station was to the west, which is accurate, but you could have more explicitly contrasted the removal of the six bus stops with the creation of the single station to better emphasize the change in infrastructure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two time periods. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You used some cohesive devices like 'additionally' and 'as a result' effectively. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To improve, try to integrate more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the changes in infrastructure to their impact on traffic flow more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the information is presented in a clear, structured manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redeveloped', 'infrastructure', 'junction', and 'dedicated'. There are some minor errors, such as '3-years period' (should be 'three-year period') and 'bust stops' (typo). While the vocabulary is functional and accurate for this task, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations related to urban planning would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good control of sentence structures, mixing simple and complex sentences effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the' city road, 'the' hospital road) and minor punctuation errors (e.g., 'one at the junction with city road another near...'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, ensure consistent use of articles and check for subject-verb agreement and punctuation, particularly when listing items or adding clauses. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free.
