IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps illustrate the changes that took place in the city hospital between 2007 and 2010. At a glance, the most striking changes were two roundabout circles and a more organised layout to utilise the space efficiently.

To begin, in 2007, there were six bus stops on both side of hospital road, which was changed and a dedicated bus stations has been built on the left side of hospital road. The city hospital has a ring road around it, which remained unchanged. In 2007, staff and public used to share same car park space, but in 2010, staff car park area remained at the same location, while there was a dedicated public car park area given, just on the eastern side of the ring road. The bus stand has two roads connected to the new roundabouts.

Overall, the hospital underwent significant developments. This will make the hospital more functional and modern, with the most notable changes being a dedicated bus station and a seperate car park area for public and staff members.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the maps, including the changes to the bus station and car parking arrangements. You successfully identified the key differences between 2007 and 2010. However, the description of the road layout is slightly imprecise; for instance, mentioning 'two roundabout circles' is a good observation, but the explanation of the road connections could be more detailed to fully capture the spatial changes. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant developments, which is a positive feature. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are fully supported by the visual data, such as noting the specific locations of the new roundabouts relative to the hospital entrance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin', 'while', and 'Overall', which help to link the information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'which was changed and a dedicated bus stations has been built' is slightly clunky. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that sentences flow more naturally into one another would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significant developments', 'functional', and 'dedicated'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'bus stations' (should be singular 'station') and 'seperate' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language regarding spatial relationships and changes, such as 'relocated', 'expanded', or 'transformed', rather than relying on simpler verbs.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that slightly distract the reader, such as 'on both side of hospital road' (should be 'sides'), 'a dedicated bus stations has been built' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'used to share same car park space' (missing article). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to vary your sentence structures further while ensuring grammatical accuracy.
