IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided maps compare the layout and development of a road access to the City Hospital over the period of 4 years.
Overall, it is evident that the road access to a City Hospital underwent considerable transformation, with several new facilities being introduced and existing structures being modified.
In 2007, the City Hospital consisted mainly of some features. To the north, there was a ring road and the area for car park was located in the east for both the staff and public. Whereas, the city road was located in the south and the Hospital Road was also in south surrounded by the bus stops which connected the City Hospital and the City Road.
By 2010, significant changes had taken place. The latest facilities such as bus station in the southwest, and two roundabouts in the east and north were introduced. Furthermore, the car parking facility for public was shifted to the northeast beside the hospital. Moreover, the Staff Car Park, Ring Road, City Road, and Hospital Road remained at their previous positions. Additionally, the bus stops were converted into a bus station, allowing easier access to different areas of a City Hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers the requirements of the task by identifying the main features and comparing the two maps. You have clearly highlighted the key changes, such as the introduction of roundabouts, the new bus station, and the relocation of the public car park. The overview is concise and provides a clear summary of the developments. To reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are precise; for instance, stating the hospital consisted 'mainly of some features' is vague. Providing more specific details about the layout in 2007 would further strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'By 2010', 'Furthermore', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each section serving a distinct purpose. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the 2007 and 2010 maps is well-managed. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence-level transitions could enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'underwent considerable transformation', 'significant changes had taken place', and 'converted into' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as the phrasing 'consisted mainly of some features', which lacks descriptive power. However, you successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to urban planning and transport. The range is adequate for the task, and your word choices generally do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'The car parking facility for public was shifted to the northeast beside the hospital.' There are occasional minor errors, such as the unnecessary use of the definite article in 'a City Hospital' and 'a road access'. Despite these, your control over grammar and punctuation is good, and the errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader. You have successfully used passive voice to describe the changes in the hospital layout.
