Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes that took around the city hospital in 2007 to 2010 like in 2007. Particularly the car parking and the road changes. The staff parking has replaced by public car parking, and some other several changes near hospital. in 2007 - city hospital in the center, ring road around the hospital hospitals connected to the ring road, bus stops connected to the hospitals, makes different parking for staff and public, the bus station is far away from the city hospital. In 2010 - public parking was added to esters side of the hospital, the bus station and staff car parking was added to the southern a side of the city, and the roundabout was introduced to the hospital, but the ring road and the city hospital are remained unchanged. In 2010 they make many near the hospital circles to get traffic less city then the 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the maps, such as the changes to parking and the addition of the roundabout. However, the report is somewhat fragmented and lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant trends. The description of the 2007 map is overly detailed and lacks a cohesive structure, while the 2010 section is better but still relies on a list-like approach. To improve, you should group information logically (e.g., transport infrastructure vs. parking facilities) and ensure you provide a clear, concise summary paragraph that highlights the primary changes between the two years.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response lacks effective paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of information. The text is essentially a single block, and the transition between the 2007 and 2010 descriptions is abrupt. While some cohesive devices are used, they are often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'in 2007' and 'in 2010' to start sentences. To achieve a higher band, you must use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, overview, and specific details, and employ a wider range of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'some other several changes' and 'they make many near the hospital circles' are imprecise and unnatural. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'esters side' (likely meaning eastern) and 'southern a side'. While the response conveys the basic meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. You should focus on using more accurate terminology for map descriptions, such as 'located to the east of', 'constructed', 'relocated', or 'remained unchanged'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The staff parking has replaced by public car parking' (passive voice error), 'hospitals connected to the ring road' (missing subject/verb), and 'to get traffic less city' (awkward phrasing). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the punctuation is inconsistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing changes in maps.
