IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the upgradation of road access to a city hospital in the years of 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the changes were made to keep the hospital road easily accessible from 2007 to 2010. In the year 2007, there was only one parking space for both the public and staff on the southeast side of the hospital. This was updated by separating the public and staff car parking space in 2010.
There was no designated bus station in the year 2007. Rather, there was a bus stop near the hospital road at the south side of the hospital. However, in 2010 a specific bus stop was included in the southwest corner of the hospital. The addition of two roundabout roads in front of the hospital made it easier to enter and exit around the hospital.
There is no significant changes in the ring road both in 2007 and 2010. The location of the hospital looks more convenient in 2010 compared to 2007 due to the alterations added.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the maps, including the parking changes, the bus station, and the roundabouts. However, the description of the road network is slightly inaccurate; for instance, the 'ring road' is not a feature present in the provided diagrams, and the description of the bus stop location is somewhat imprecise. While the main trends are identified, the analysis lacks a degree of precision required for a higher band. The overview is present but could be more comprehensive by highlighting the most significant transformation, which is the improved traffic flow management.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the map (parking, transport, and general layout). Cohesive devices such as 'In the year 2007', 'However', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, the transition between the final paragraph and the rest of the text is slightly abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though the mention of a 'ring road' creates a minor coherence issue as it is not clearly identifiable in the source material.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'upgradation', 'designated', and 'convenient' used appropriately. However, 'upgradation' is not standard English; 'upgrading' or 'improvements' would be more natural. The range is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common descriptors. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to spatial descriptions and changes, such as 'transformed', 'relocated', or 'integrated'. The word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'There is no significant changes' (should be 'are') and 'in the years of 2007' (should be 'in 2007'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The use of prepositions and verb tenses is generally consistent, but the subject-verb agreement error is a recurring issue that needs attention to ensure greater accuracy in future writing.
